Making Models Work for You

In many of the chapters in this text, we ask you to use a model to help you focus in more depth on a specific topic. This chapter is no exception, and as suggested in Chapter 5, we recommend Kenyon’s (1999) Ethical Decision-Making Model.

We now look at more personal aspects of ethical decision making in internship. Box 6.3 describes the ways that you will deepen your understanding of ethics and internship.

Exercise 6.9 Using Kenyon’s Ethical Decision-Making Model

Step 1

We would like for you to use the model to work through a current ethical challenge or issue that you or your supervisor is confronting, or anticipating confronting, at the internship site. Since the model encompasses multiple steps, choose a challenge or issue that is important to you, your work, and your professional growth.

Step 2

Once you create a rough draft of your decision making related to the issue, share your thinking process with your faculty and site supervisors. If you do have a challenge or issue that warrants use of the model, return to this assignment at the appropriate time.

1. Describe the issue.___________________________________________________________________

2. Consider the ethical guidelines.________________________________________________________

3. Examine the conflicts.________________________________________________________

4. Resolve the conflicts._________________________________________________________________

5. Generate all possible courses of action._________________________________________________

6. Examine and evaluate the action alternatives.____________________________________________

7. Select and evaluate the preferred action.____________________________________________

8. Plan the action.____________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________________________

9. Evaluate the outcome.________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________________________

10. Examine the implications.________________________________________________________________

Step 3

Consider the context factors that influence ethical decision making. We introduced the importance of contextual factors in Chapter 5, Table 5.2.

What is the perspective of the university and human service program? The agency?

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

What are the contextual factors present in this issue? How did you consider these in your decision making?

Step 4

In Chapter 5, we presented final consideration when evaluating your ethical decision making. This self-test is a way you can further evaluate what you learned during the process. To complete this assessment, answer the following questions from the Department of Counseling and Human Services (n.d.) at the University of Syracuse:

• Did I made consistent decisions when encountering similar situations? If I made different decisions, how to I account for these differences? Are there other options I did not consider?

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

• If another counselor were facing a similar issue, would I recommend my decision making and resolution?

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

• Did I make this decision because it was easy, it was politically smart, or was best for me?

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

• With whom am I comfortable sharing this situation, my thinking about it, and my responses? If am comfortable, why? If not, why?

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

• Am I compromising a standard that I believe in? How might this influence a future decision?
